Smokey Joe & The Kid – Somehow (Feat. Blake Worrell)
Directed by Senbeï aka The Kid
Released: 2015
Smokey Joe & The Kid are two beat makers from Bordeaux, passionate about hip hop, bass music and groove melodies from the early 20th century – think ragtime / swing / roaring 20s USA. Percussion solos played with scratch, beats and melodies performed with MPCs; everything played live. If it sounds curious, well it is. The amalgamation of electro and hip hop brought to life with original swing sounds has crowds going nuts every time Smokey Joe & The Kid play.
From the Garonne’s dock the new EP has brought along US ‘puppetmaster’ Blake Worrell to add some lyrical depth to this masterpiece. A former member of the incredibly popular German outfit Puppetmastaz who perform funk/rap shows behind a wall of hand puppets.
Smokey Joe & The Kid have been ripping up stages around France and Europe since the release of their debut album ‘Nasty Tricks’ on Banzai Lab in 2013 and have also delivered two critically acclaimed EP’s last year, ‘The Game’, recorded in California and ‘Rough & Tough’, a genuine display of power.
Smokey Joe (Matthieu Perrein) comes from good stock. His mother used to be a jazz pianist and his father a drummer. He started playing saxophone at the age of 7 and started touring in a jazz big band at 12. When he turned 17 he played bass player in a reggae band with which he discovered big stages when opening for legendary acts like Lee Scratch Perry. Smokey Joe soon discovered electronic music and met The Kid (Hugo Sanchez) who was also a child prodigy on guitar from the age of 11 at the Conservatoire. His teenage years were spent in a grindcore band but he truly found his way with electronic music and scratching in the early 2000s.
The new EP ‘Smokid Inc.’ is another step up a sharp ladder of great musical output in their growing catalogue and now featuring the sharp edge of Blake Worrell, a most versatile and hyper-creative MC; the combination is deadly.
