Until The Ribbon Breaks – Romeo
Until The Ribbon Breaks – Romeo (2013)
Directed by: Peter “Pete” Lawrie-Winfield
Having recently completed his North American debut tour supporting New Zealand pop phenom Lorde, British DJ, producer, singer, songwriter and visual artist Until The Ribbon Breaks, has commanded a strong musical presence in his own right with his inaugural EP ‘A Taste of Silver’. Garnering praise from critics including Interview Magazine, SPIN, New York Observer, MTV and FADER, Until The Ribbon Breaks’ “apocalyptic pop,” as monikered by Pitchfork, holds steady with the release of his latest track, ‘Romeo.’
“While writing Romeo, I put everything on the line to make the music I wanted to make; to make the music I had in my head.” He adds, “the words to Romeo just fell out of a thick, heavy, confusing air. While the music took a lot longer to compose, the words to this song wrote themselves.” Dubbing it “the most important track” on the EP, Pete reveals its the most “lyrically honest and personal” of his initial release, as it was “written at a time of deep personal upheaval.”
In his signature style of coupling imagery and sound, Pete’s self-made video for ‘Romeo’ draws from Baz Luhrmann’s cult-classic cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare’s ever-famed tragic love story, Romeo + Juliet.
When Pete learned that Lurhmann had not only seen, but liked what he’d done with excerpts from the film, it was the project’s pinnacle. “From conception to the finished piece, creating the video for ‘Romeo’ had taken a lot out of me. His approval was overwhelming. I finally felt that I’d said what I’d needed to say, without compromise.”
Until The Ribbon Breaks is currently working on his debut album due in 2014.
