Forest Swords – The Weight Of Gold (2014)

Forest Swords unveiled a new video for “The Weight Of Gold”, the second single off his Tri Angle Records debut full length album, Engravings. Filmed in a number of desolate locations, the video features a dancer whose abrupt movements are in perfect synchronization with the combination of haunting synths, ghostly vocal samples, spindly guitars and heavy percussion that when combined create the elusive producer’s unique signature sound.
For “The Weight Of Gold” video, Forest Swords’ Matthew Barnes decided to collaborate with Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed ‘Black Swan’ and recently became the new director at the Paris Opera. Barnes noted, “The locations Benjamin picked for this video really resonate with the track. I’ve always associated the songs on Engravings with the British landscape—woodland and sandstone, because that’s the environment I live in and produced the record in—but taking the music out of that context and placing it in Israel definitely shifts the track in a direction I didn’t expect.”
In regards to the video’s concept, Millepid commented, “Billy Barry is a dancer I saw perform at Julliard before he left, maybe three years ago…I wanted to create a portrait of him and that’s what this is. Billy’s quality as a dancer is so otherworldly. The sense of solitude depicted in the film reflects just how different and unique he is as an artist.”
Millepied went on to say “In this film, the camera is a simple observer. The point was to present Billy in the most pure and direct way possible. It is a portrait. Billy makes a journey from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean, navigating the gorgeous country of Israel. An evanescent godlike figure, he dances, reaching a trance-like state.”
