Following last year’s breakthrough Breathing Underwater EP, London based future-soul artist Ego Ella May now returns with her new Zero EP, exclusively available via Bandcamp. Flaunting her versatility on the EP’s introduction‘Bull’ (prod. Mini-D), May switches from measured verses to velvet-textured tones with ease, marrying dissonant piano stabs and a seductively off-kilter bassline. Meanwhile EP closer ‘Tea and Sympathy’ (prod. Budgie) continues her musing on romance with a careful organization and intricacy on production, reverberating underneath to leave May with her distinctly modern sound.
Ella May’s vocals take center stage on lead track ‘How Far’ (prod. Wu Lu & Reiss G), a confidently executed reflection on love that calls to mind early Erykah Badu refracted through a prism of modern electronica. “Wish I could know how far we could go,” she utters with a maturity that belies her age. Igniting the blogosphere with her inaugural Tree EP, Ego Ella May was quickly lauded as MOBO’s One To Watch alongside the likes of Kwabs.
Shortly after came the follow up EP Breathing Underwater, a stunning collection of tracks uploaded to Bandcamp which saw Ella May draw widespread praise from the likes of MTV, Noisey, Hunger TV and Boiler Room, forging creative partnerships with LA label Soulection and Berlin based affiliate IAMNOBODI amongst others. Continuously willing to experiment, Ego’s time is split between solo work and being part of beatmaking duo MDMay (with Mini-D). Now with her Zero EP, you can expect to hear plenty more from Ego Ella May, soul’s future superstar who’s set to make her own mark on 2015. You can catch Ego Ella May play a live show at East London’s Servant Jazz Quarters on April 23rd.
